Feet to the Fire fills a gap long closed to historians and outsiders interested in Indonesia. The authors’ extensive interviews and apparent access to hitherto classified documents have filled in the lacunae on this controversial episode. The work stands alone in its detailed accounting of a controversial period in US-Indonesian relations. — Col. John B. Haseman, USAF, Ret., U.S. Defense Attaché in Indonesia, 1990-1994

Conboy and Morrison have done masterful research, ferreting out documents and interviewing both American and Indonesian participants. A surprising number of former CIA agents appear here, and their input makes this an extraordinarily important piece of history. The authors found an exciting story, one that has never been told in this sort of detail. They know their subject matter and have produced a first rate work. — Dale Andradé, historian at the Center for Military History and author of Ashes to Ashes: The Phoenix Program and the Vietnam War

Product Description
More than forty years ago the Central Intelligence Agency began a top-secret covert action campaign designed to hold Indonesia’s left-leaning President Sukarno’s feet to the fire and prevent a strategic crossroad from falling into the communist camp. In a fast-paced, engrossing narrative evoking the novels of John LeCarré and Graham Greene, the authors provide the first unclassified, detailed case study of an operation that has escaped public scrutiny for decades.

“Feet to the Fire” is a well documented, unbiased account of CIA shenanigans in Indonesia during a brief period in the 1950’s. (At least it seems to me to be well documented and unbiased but I have no first-hand knowledge of any of the events described.) To me, the story is fantastic and so is the cast: scheming Indonesian politicians, indecisive Indonesian colonels, CIA employees cast from the Felix Leiter mold, CIA contractors playing cowboys and Indians with very dangerous toys, a prevaricating ambassador, and gray-haired old men in Washington pulling the strings.

Product Description. The eighteenth century witnessed the rise of the China market and the changes that resulted in global consumption patterns, from opium smoking to tea drinking. In a valuable transnational perspective, Leonard Blussé chronicles the economic and cultural transformations in East Asia through three key cities. Canton was the port of call for foreign merchants in the Qing empire. Nagasaki was the official port of Tokugawa Japan. Batavia served as the connection site between the Indian Ocean and China seas for ships of the Dutch East India Company.

The effects of global change were wrenching. The monopolies suffered challenges, trade corridors shifted, and new players appeared. Yankee traders in their fast clipper ships made great inroads. As Dutch control declined, Batavia lost its premier position. Nagasaki became a shadow of its former self. Canton, however, surged to become the foremost port of East Asia. But on the horizon were new kinds of port cities, not controlled from above and more attuned to the needs of the overseas trading network. With the establishment of the free port of Singapore and the rise of the treaty ports—Hong Kong, Shanghai, Yokohama—the nature of the China seas trade, and relations between East Asia and the West, changed forever.

Leonard Blussé is Professor of History and Asian-European Relations, Leiden University.

Product Description. This book explores the political and ideological motivations behind the formation of the Nahdlatul Ulama-affiliated political party, and Abdurrahman Wahid’s rise to the Presidency of Indonesia after having led NU for 15 years away from formal politics. It sheds light on the complex and historical rivalries within Islam in Indonesia, and how those relationships inform and explain political alliances and manoeuvres in contemporary Indonesia.

In the seventeenth century, the Dutch established a trading base at the Indonesian site of Jacarta. What began as a minor colonial outpost under the name Batavia would become, over the next three centuries, the flourishing economic and political nucleus of the Dutch Asian Empire. In this pioneering study, Jean Gelman Taylor offers a comprehensive analysis of Batavia’s extraordinary social world—its marriage patterns, religious and social organizations, economic interests, and sexual roles. With an emphasis on the urban ruling elite, she argues that Europeans and Asians alike were profoundly altered by their merging, resulting in a distinctive hybrid, Indo-Dutch culture.

Original in its focus on gender and use of varied sources—travelers’ accounts, newspapers, legal codes, genealogical data, photograph albums, paintings, and ceramics—The Social World of Batavia, first published in 1983, forged new paths in the study of colonial society. In this second edition, Gelman offers a new preface as well as an additional chapter tracing the development of these themes by a new generation of scholars.

General Suharto is synonymous with modern Indonesia. He became President amidst extreme social upheaval and mass violence in 1966 and retained his position until 1998. In this book R.E. Elson provides insights into a man who exerted extraordinary power and influence, presented himself as an infallible father of the nation, yet remained mysterious.

Suharto sought to transform Indonesia into a strong, united and economically prosperous nation-state, yet after half a century of influence, he is remembered as much for extensive human rights abuse and unprecedented corruption. As Indonesia emerges from the political numbness that characterized his era, its future seems precarious. R.E. Elson is Professor, School of Asian and International Studies at Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia and Director of Griffith Asia Pacific Council. He is the author of The End of Peasantry in Southeast Asia (Palgrave, 1997) and The Politics of Colonial Expansion (Southeast Asia Program Publications, 1992).

The coup referred to by Hunter (a political analyst at the Central Intelligence Agency for 23 years) in the title of her book is not the toppling of Indonesian president Sukarno and assumption of power by General Suharto, but instead the preceding failed attempt to establish a military junta by the “30th of September Movement” in response to an alleged CIA-sponsored opposing coup conspiracy by the so-called “Council of Generals.” Hunter examines these events in reverse chronological order, attempting to establish that at the heart of the “30th of September Movement” was a secret organization run by high-level members of the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) that planned, with President Sukarno’s active cooperation, to institute a socialist state under Sukarno’s leadership, later to be succeeded by PKI Chairman Aidit.”–Reference & Research Book News

“Helen-Louise Hunter, an analyst in the CIA’s Directorate of Intelligence during the Indonesian crisis of 1965-66, drew upon masses of classified intelligence available in CIA and other government agencies to produce the first reliable analysis of a episode that not only defied comprehension at the time it occurred, but has since retained an aura of mystery and, indeed, controversy among observers in and outside of government. Ms. Hunter deserves admiration for an impressive accomplishment. Finally declassified by the Central Intelligence Agency, the story is now open to the public. It is readable, intelligible and enormously interesting. As one who witnessed the Indonesian upheaval at first hand, I recommend her book as the best thing written on the subject to date.”–B. Hugh Tovar formerly CIA station chief in Djakarta

This book is a detailed account of the planning for the coup over a period of several weeks before the actual coup on 30 September 1965 and the role President Sukarno played in the affair. It establishes the central role of the PKI in the planning beyond any doubt and the utter lack of warning of the army of the forthcoming raids on the homes of Indonesia’s top eight generals that left seven of them dead within a matter of hours.
